Setting up Claude API - Sonar AI Guide

Someone in leadership needs a quick report on sales or overdue invoices. What should take five minutes turns into a long task. You build saved searches, export CSVs, and fix the data in Excel. Before long, you are the human link between NetSuite and everyone else in the company.
Oracle's NetSuite AI Connector Service helps with this work. It lets Claude answer questions using live NetSuite data. You can ask for sales trends, unpaid invoices, or stock levels. The connector follows your NetSuite role permissions to control access. It works with your current NetSuite account. You need a supported Claude plan, such as Claude Pro, to use it.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) helps AI tools talk to business software. Think of it as USB-C for AI. It gives supported tools a common way to connect with other systems. These include ERP, CRM, and other business apps. You do not need to build a new link for each supported tool.
For NetSuite Integration, this gives Claude a way to work with your business data. It can run saved searches and SuiteQL queries. It can also run supported reports. With the right permissions, it can create or update records. These tools help Claude find data about sales, customers, invoices, and stock.
This matters because finance teams spend a lot of time gathering data. Controllers often build the same aging reports each week. Warehouse managers check stock across several sites. Sales teams need fresh figures for meetings. These tasks take time away from work that needs human judgment. A good AI setup can reduce that extra work.
The connector uses NetSuite services to access your data. If you have worked with NetSuite Integrations, some parts will look familiar. OAuth 2.0 helps confirm who can sign in. SuiteQL lets users ask detailed questions about business data. NetSuite checks the user's access rights before sharing results.
Oracle's MCP Standard Tools SuiteApp gives Claude the tools it needs. You can install it from the NetSuite SuiteApp Marketplace. Once installed, it supports several types of work.
There is one key point to understand. The connector lets Claude act when a user makes a request. It is not a full replacement for scheduled system workflows. For example, asking Claude to check overdue invoices is a supported use case. An unattended process that checks and acts on new invoices may need more setup.
This is where the role setup matters. The connector follows the access rules assigned to each NetSuite user. If a role can only view customers and invoices, Claude gets that same access. It cannot use the connector to bypass those limits.
Oracle also blocks the Administrator role from MCP connections. This helps prevent broad access through AI tools. You must use a role with the right permissions. A custom role often gives you better control. This also makes it easier to review who can access what.
Let's walk through the setup. You need access to NetSuite as an Administrator for the first steps. You also need a supported Claude account.
Go to Setup > Company > Enable Features > SuiteCloud tab. Check that these features are turned on.
Save the page when you are done. Check your company's access rules before moving to the next step.
Go to Customization > SuiteCloud Development > SuiteApp Marketplace. Search for "MCP Standard Tools" and install it.
Oracle manages this SuiteApp. It provides the standard tools for records, reports, saved searches, and SuiteQL. Without it, those standard tools will not appear in Claude. You can still use other approved custom MCP tools if your account has them.
This step deserves extra care. Go to Setup > Users/Roles > Manage Roles and create a role. You can also update an existing non-administrator role.
Required permissions on the Setup tab:
Oracle notes that OAuth 2.0 Access Tokens differ from the older Access Tokens permission. Check the exact permission name before you save.
Then add the record permissions your users need. These may include Customers, Invoices, Sales Orders, and Items. Some report and search tools need other permissions. Check Oracle's standard tools guide for each tool.
Take your time here. The role sets the limits for what Claude can do. Start with View access when that meets your needs. Add Edit access only for approved tasks. This keeps your setup easier to manage and review.
Go to Setup > Users/Roles > Manage Users. Find the person who will connect Claude. Open the user record and go to the Access tab.
Assign the new MCP role. Check that the user has access to the right records and subsidiaries. Save the changes before testing the connection.
Open Claude at claude.ai and sign in. Oracle's current guide uses Search and tools > Add connectors.
Under the Web tab, find the NetSuite AI connector. Click Connect and enter the server URL.
For Oracle's MCP Standard Tools SuiteApp, use:
https://<ACCOUNT_ID>.suitetalk.api.netsuite.com/services/mcp/v1/suiteapp/com.netsuite.mcpstandardtools
Replace <ACCOUNT_ID> with your NetSuite account ID.
You can also use this URL to access all available MCP tools:
https://<ACCOUNT_ID>.suitetalk.api.netsuite.com/services/mcp/v1/all
Important detail: The /all link returns all available tools. The SuiteApp link returns tools from the named SuiteApp. Both formats are supported by Oracle.
After you add the link, follow Claude's connection steps. Open Search and tools > Manage connectors if prompted. Select NetSuite and click Connect.
The OAuth process will ask you to approve NetSuite access. Sign in with your assigned MCP role, not Administrator. Review the request and allow the connection.
Start with a simple question. For example:
"Show me my top 10 customers by revenue."
Claude should use the available NetSuite tools to answer your question. The output may appear as a table or written summary.
Check the results against NetSuite before using them in business reports. Make sure the figures, date range, and filters match your request.
Once connected, the real value comes from choosing useful tasks. You do not need AI for every job. Start with the reports and data requests your team already handles each week.
Make a list of the data requests your team handles most often.
These tasks often involve the same steps each time. Claude can help reduce the manual work. The time saved will depend on how your data is stored. It also depends on your role settings and the tools available.
A simple task is a good place to begin. Test one workflow before making it part of your daily process.
Clear questions lead to better results. Vague prompts leave too much room for guessing. Detailed prompts help Claude find the right data.
Weak prompt: "Show me invoices."
Strong prompt: "Show me all invoices overdue by more than 30 days, grouped by customer, sorted by amount descending, with total outstanding per customer."
Save the prompts that work well. Give them clear names so others can find them. Add notes about the data and filters each prompt uses.
Your team can reuse these prompts instead of writing them from scratch. This keeps common reports more consistent. It also gives new users a good starting point.
Let's look at where this connection can help. The largest gains often come from tasks your team repeats each day.
A CFO needs Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) trends for a board meeting. DSO measures how long customers take to pay. The finance team may need to build reports and check several data sources.
With the connector, the CFO can ask Claude for the right data. For example:
"What's our DSO trend for the last 6 months, broken down by customer segment?"
Claude can use approved tools to gather the figures. The CFO can then ask which customers may be driving changes. These follow-up questions can make analysis easier.
The results still need review. DSO figures must use the right sales and receivables data. Your team should check the calculation before sharing it with the board.
Think about a controller who checks overdue invoices each morning. The work may involve exporting a CSV file. Then the controller sorts the data and emails the collections team.
With Claude, the controller can save a prompt for the same task.
"Show me all invoices overdue by more than 30 days, grouped by customer, sorted by amount descending."
Running this prompt can reduce manual report work. Instead of spending time sorting files, the controller can focus on unpaid balances.
The time saved depends on your current process. Some teams may see quick gains. Others may need to clean up data or adjust their access settings first.
Finance teams often review large sales orders before shipment. They check for missing purchase orders and approval details. Finding errors late can delay shipments and cause extra work.
A daily prompt could be:
"Find sales orders over $50,000 created today without purchase order numbers."
This helps the team find orders that need attention. Staff can review those orders before fulfillment. The prompt supports their work without replacing the normal approval process.
For more advanced tasks, NetSuite Optimization can help improve how these checks fit into daily work.
The return depends on how much manual work the connector helps remove. Teams should compare their old process with the new one.
Results vary based on several factors.
For someone who spends hours gathering data each week, the value can add up. But do not assume every team will save the same amount. Measure your current process first. Then track the time needed after the connector is in use.
Not every business needs the same setup. Your existing systems and reporting needs should guide the choice.
For workflows that must run without a user prompt, you may need other tools. NetSuite scripts, workflows, or other systems can handle those tasks.
The connector works best when it supports a clear business need. It should fit into your existing process, not create another one to manage.
This part deserves care. When Claude answers a NetSuite question, business data may leave your NetSuite account.
NetSuite sends approved query results to the AI client. Claude then uses that data to answer your question. Your role controls what the connector can access inside NetSuite.
However, Anthropic handles the data sent to Claude. Its data rules depend on the product and account type. For consumer Claude accounts, raw remote MCP data is not used for model training. Content added to a normal chat may be treated differently.
Review Anthropic's current data rules before sharing sensitive records. Your company should also decide which users can use the connector.
The connector uses OAuth 2.0 for sign-in. It follows NetSuite role permissions to control data access. Oracle also provides MCP logs to help admins review activity.
Important points:
Security is not just about getting the connection to work. It is also about setting clear limits and checking them often.
These steps help keep the connector under control. They also make it easier to answer questions during an audit.
Connecting Claude can be simple when your NetSuite setup is clean. Things get harder when roles overlap or subsidiaries have different rules. Old scripts and NetSuite customization can also affect how the system works. That's when things start getting squirrelly.

You need a NetSuite account with Server SuiteScript, REST Web Services, and OAuth 2.0 enabled. Install Oracle's MCP Standard Tools SuiteApp from the marketplace. Use a role with MCP Server Connection and OAuth 2.0 Access Tokens permissions. Standard record tools also need REST Web Services access. Do not connect using Administrator. You also need a supported Claude plan, such as Claude Pro.
Setup time depends on your NetSuite account, roles, and access rules. An administrator can usually handle the first setup steps. Users can connect to Claude once the tools and permissions are ready. More complex accounts may need extra work. This is common when subsidiaries have different access rules. A consultant can help test the setup and check security before your team starts using it.
Claude can read, create, and update supported NetSuite records through the connector. What it can do depends on the user's role and tool permissions. For example, editing a sales order requires the right record access. SuiteQL queries are used to read data, not change it. Starting with View access can help keep things simple. Add write access only when the business needs it.
Claude can access data allowed by the user's NetSuite role and available MCP tools. This may include customers, invoices, sales orders, and custom fields. It can also run saved searches and SuiteQL queries. Oracle's standard tools support direct access to supported NetSuite reports. Users still need the right permissions for each tool. Claude cannot use the connector to bypass those NetSuite access rules.
The connector uses OAuth 2.0 and follows NetSuite's role-based access rules. Data sent to Claude leaves NetSuite for external processing. Review Anthropic's current data policies before sharing private business records. Oracle has not assessed the connector for HIPAA compliance. Healthcare teams should review this before using protected health data. Use limited roles, review activity logs, and train staff on safe data use.
