BlueSnap for NetSuite and BigCommerce: Everything You Need to Know

BlueSnap for NetSuite and BigCommerce: Everything You Need to Know

Gateway vs. processor: why the difference matters

A payment gateway is the pass-through layer that moves transaction data. The processor is the one that actually accepts the transaction and sends funds to the merchant's business account.

Many legacy setups split those roles across two providers. BlueSnap acts as both gateway and processor, which gives merchants a simpler, more consolidated payments stack.

What the Payroc acquisition adds

BlueSnap has spent more than 20 years building for card-not-present payments: digital, online, and integrated with platforms like NetSuite and BigCommerce. Payroc brings deep roots in in-person card processing.

Together, they can now support merchants that sell online and run brick-and-mortar or retail locations.

How BlueSnap fits into NetSuite

BlueSnap offers a fully native, pre-built SuiteApp available through the SuiteApp Marketplace.

  • Fast setup: Implementation takes less than 45 minutes.
  • Built for complex accounts: It supports multi-subsidiary, multi-currency, and multi-channel setups.
  • Flexible use cases: Merchants can send invoices out of NetSuite, accept deposits through pay links, and process payments on SuiteCommerce or SCA sites.
  • More payment options: Credit card, ACH, and compliant surcharging all run through one integration.
  • Efficiency gains: Features like auto-reconciliation cut manual work, with no upfront costs.

For Anchor Group's NetSuite team, the biggest advantage is that BlueSnap understands how NetSuite digests payment data, which isn't always true of other processors.

How BlueSnap works with BigCommerce

BlueSnap's native BigCommerce integration takes about five to ten minutes to set up. It's especially useful for B2B merchants:

  • Lower B2B card costs: Level 2 and Level 3 data help reduce interchange fees on expensive corporate credit cards.
  • B2B Edition support: It works with BigCommerce's more customizable B2B Edition, not just the classic platform.
  • Multi-storefront and multi-currency: Merchants can run multiple storefronts in different currencies and settle back in their currency of choice.

Support that isn't “turn and burn”

Software projects rarely go in a straight line. BlueSnap backs its platform with tier-one support and stays involved as scope and use cases change. Michael and Reuben have worked with many of the same clients, and neither treats payments as set-it-and-forget-it.

Bottom line

Your payment processor shouldn't add complexity to your ERP or ecommerce stack. With a native, all-in-one option like BlueSnap, NetSuite and BigCommerce merchants can consolidate providers, speed up setup, reduce processing costs, and get a partner that sticks around after go-live.

Michael (00:00)
Hey everybody, thank you for tuning in to this edition of the Anchor Group podcast. Today we're going to be talking about processing payments in the NetSuite world. We know there are a lot of different payment processors you could partner with. Today we have on Reuben from BlueSnap. BlueSnap is a payment processor that works very well for NetSuite, and we're going to hear how and why later in this episode. But the cool thing about BlueSnap is that they also have a really great partnership with BigCommerce.

So if you have a BigCommerce website, or if you're thinking about migrating to BigCommerce and you want one payment processor across both BigCommerce and NetSuite, BlueSnap is legitimately a good option to consider. So today we're going to have Reuben Marlowe on the call, and we're going to discuss all things BlueSnap.

Hey Reuben, thank you for hopping on today's podcast. Thanks for joining.

Reuben (01:24)
Absolutely. Thank you so much for having me, Michael. Really excited to get on here and talk about NetSuite, BigCommerce, our partnership with Anchor Group, and ultimately how we help each other support the customers at the bottom every day.

Michael (01:37)
Heck yeah. And for those of you listening, at Anchor Group we think very highly of the BlueSnap product and the BlueSnap team. Reuben and I work with a lot of mutual clients, just making sure that they're set up for success on payments. Our goal for this conversation is to share the way BlueSnap works very well for NetSuite and/or BigCommerce, whatever pertains to your business, because both of us, from our respective positions, have seen this be a very helpful payment processing tool for people.

Also, if you don't live every day in the world of processing payments, at times it can be a little confusing. The terminology, what should I be thinking about, what really matters as I vet out different payment processors for my specific business? Our hope is to demystify some of those concepts and ideas for you during today's conversation, so that as you look for your next payment processor, you know what you should be looking for. So Reuben, before we hop into how BlueSnap works for NetSuite and BigCommerce, walk us through what BlueSnap is and how BlueSnap fits into the broader payments ecosystem.

Reuben (02:50)
Great question, Michael. What you said earlier is very on point. If you're not from the industry, it can be a little challenging to approach at the very beginning. I've been in payments my entire career. This is what I live and breathe every day. So, starting out with who BlueSnap is: at the end of the day, we are an all-in-one, global, seamless, and more modern payments processing platform and payments processing provider.

I'll start with "all-in-one" because at BlueSnap, we act as both your gateway and the processor remitting funds out to the customer's business account. This lends itself to a much more consolidated, more modern approach to your payments processing, rather than having to leverage a separate, more legacy gateway provider integration and relationship. So that's who BlueSnap is, from thirty thousand feet looking down.

Michael (03:45)
Reuben, quick question on that. Can you clarify the true difference between a payment processor and a payment gateway? Maybe what is an example of a payment gateway, and where do you see that play out as it relates to NetSuite?

Reuben (04:02)
Great question. When you think about a standalone payment gateway, Michael, they're really acting as the intermediary pass-through layer or party, if you will, for the data. Let's take NetSuite for example, since that's what we're here to talk about, at least partially. They act as that data pass-through layer to the processor, who is actually accepting that transaction and then remitting those funds out to the customer or client's business account. So a gateway is just that first intermediary layer, whereas a processor is really the one actually handling the transactions and the flow of funds.

Michael (04:43)
And I think that's an important distinction, understanding that BlueSnap has all of that in one, because oftentimes I'll be speaking with different companies on NetSuite or with an e-commerce website, and at times people can get a little confused based on what legacy platform they're operating on today. So I just wanted to clarify that distinction. Now, a couple of months ago, I saw an announcement, maybe on LinkedIn, that BlueSnap was recently acquired by Payroc. Can you explain what that does for BlueSnap?

Reuben (05:15)
Yeah, great question. I love that you brought up the acquisition, Michael, because it's very exciting. To give a little bit of context for the acquisition and why Payroc approached BlueSnap: we've been architecting our solution over the past 20-plus years to be the best card-not-present, or digital/online, payment solution and platform in the entire ecosystem and marketplace. Where we truly shine is with our integrated relationships, such as BigCommerce and NetSuite, and having this global scalability with the comprehensive nature of both gateway and processor. That's why Payroc approached BlueSnap, because we are truly this best-in-class, global, all-in-one solution.

Historically, we've focused on card-not-present: digital, online, anything where you're not swiping a card physically. Payroc, however, has deep historical roots in the card-present, or physical in-person, card processing space. They're the largest reseller of Clover terminals globally and the largest privately held processor in North America that's non-bank associated. So what the acquisition really does for BlueSnap is expand our capabilities beyond this card-not-present, digital and online specialization. Now we can help our mutual customers and our own BlueSnap customers if they have brick-and-mortar or retail locations, further delivering this all-in-one strategy and offering.

Michael (06:50)
And I think that's powerful for companies that are looking to grow, looking to get more competitive rates in certain areas, or just upgrading their tech stack, even from the brick-and-mortar perspective. I was excited to hear about the acquisition and the expanding capabilities of BlueSnap and your closely aligned sister companies.

Now, Reuben, as you know, at Anchor Group we are often working with companies that use NetSuite as their ERP. And we're often talking to people who are looking to upgrade their NetSuite environment, whether that's through optimization, adding new modules, or just understanding how to get the most bang for their buck out of NetSuite. Oftentimes in those conversations, as we review the entire tech stack, the question comes up: is there a better payment processor you could go with? I know you work a lot in the NetSuite space specifically, so I'm wondering if you can give the audience some details about how BlueSnap plays in the NetSuite ecosystem and what some of the pros of using BlueSnap there are.

Reuben (08:07)
Absolutely. Good question again. When it comes to NetSuite specifically, to give a little bit of background: BlueSnap, being this all-in-one payments processor, also has a fully native, one hundred percent pre-built, integrated SuiteApp that you can find directly through the SuiteApp Marketplace. Our integration is fully native, meant to support multi-subsidiary, multi-currency, and multi-channel. Maybe you're sending invoices directly out of NetSuite or accepting customer deposits through pay links. Maybe you have a SuiteCommerce or SCA site that you're running as well. It's meant to be this multifaceted integration: multi-channel, multi-currency, multi-subsidiary, and multi-use case. Again, going back to that all-in-one offering, so you don't have a fragmented, disconnected, and siloed processor architecture for your ERP environment.

One of the reasons I think we truly excel within the NetSuite space is the native aspect and compatibility of our SuiteApp. It takes less than an hour, quite literally less than 45 minutes, to implement BlueSnap in NetSuite, so the setup and onboarding process is extremely painless and straightforward. And because of the flexibility of our native NetSuite integration, we're able to conform to whatever workflows, scripting, website, UI, or front-end customizations a business may have, because BlueSnap sits in the background as the core payments engine running seamlessly, whether it's credit card acceptance, ACH acceptance, or surcharging, which is a big area right now that we have built out fully compliant for NetSuite users.

So again, I think it all comes back to not needing multiple providers, not needing multiple technology solutions, and not relying on legacy NetSuite bundles. When you come to BlueSnap, we have no upfront costs and easy, straightforward onboarding, and we're able to conform to what the business is doing today while adding value through optimization. Whether that's the bottom line and hard costs, greater efficiencies via features like auto-reconciliation, or helping create a superior front-end experience on SuiteCommerce by adding additional payment types or adjusting for specific flows, whether they're terms or not. It comes back to us being able to meet any business payment need or use case through NetSuite, all through one integration.

Michael (10:35)
Reuben, that's all good. And real quick for those listening: that's where at Anchor Group, as NetSuite consultants, we have seen the power of working with BlueSnap specifically. Their ability to have that SuiteApp and really understand how NetSuite digests payment data is very important, and we don't always get that with other payment processors that we or our clients work with.

That's one reason we're so excited to have Reuben on today and really talk through what that looks like in NetSuite, because being able to use their tool out of the box, or implement it in a way that meets a client's or merchant's needs, is very important. And it's something that is legitimately possible through the power of BlueSnap. Now, as we understand it, NetSuite is not the only thing BlueSnap does. You also play very well in the BigCommerce space. I'm wondering if you'd be willing to share a couple of highlights about how BlueSnap works with BigCommerce.

Reuben (11:43)
Absolutely. At its core, it's very similar to how we work with NetSuite, Michael. We have a pre-built, fully native integration for BigCommerce. As you know, NetSuite can be quite the beast sometimes, so whereas the setup timeline for NetSuite is about 45 minutes or so, with BigCommerce it's even more straightforward. In about five to ten minutes, we'll have somebody set up, connected, and potentially live to start taking card transactions online.

Where we tie in very strongly with BigCommerce is our global scalability and things like our B2B specialization. We know a lot of customers these days are utilizing not just the classic BigCommerce, but also the more customized and highly editable B2B Edition. Through features such as Level 2 and Level 3 data, we're able to reduce interchange costs for these really expensive B2B corporate credit card types, which is something we help a lot of customers with to ultimately deliver an ROI, one of our brand promises.

The other way we truly excel in the BigCommerce space is that we have multi-storefront support along with multi-currency presentment. So whether a business has one, four, or five storefronts, and they're displaying in different currencies, BlueSnap is able to support that and settle back dynamically in their currency of choice.

So again, it comes back to all native, all in one place, with tier-one support. Because as we know, when we talk about software, it's not always a straight line from A to B. BlueSnap truly has the industry expertise and the people behind the platform to back up the customer and provide white-glove partnership and support. If we run into customization, or we need to change the scope or use case, BlueSnap is there every step of the way. And I think BigCommerce, as well as their users and Anchor Group, really see the value in that. We're not here to turn and burn. We're here to support that customer long term with a top-class integration that's built to support what the business needs to do, driving successful outcomes.

Michael (14:00)
What I'm going to re-emphasize there is what Reuben just said: turn and burn. Our experience working with the people at BlueSnap is that they are truly not there to turn and burn clients. As I mentioned earlier, Reuben and I have worked with the same companies, mutual clients of ours, and neither of us views it as a set-it-and-forget-it sort of thing. So if you need more involvement from somebody on the payment processor side, BlueSnap comes highly regarded from the Anchor Group side, and Reuben specifically, we work with a lot.

So Reuben, as we wrap things up here, if somebody has listened to this and wants to explore and learn more about BlueSnap, how can they reach out to you or to BlueSnap as a whole?

Reuben (14:49)
Of course you can find me on LinkedIn. These days, if you don't have a LinkedIn profile, you're maybe the odd one out. You can find me at Reuben Marlowe, that's R-E-U-B-E-N M-A-R-L-O-W-E. Feel free to send me a message or a DM and reach out. Or you can go directly to the BlueSnap website at www.bluesnap.com and fill out the "Talk to Sales" form in the top right corner. That'll go directly to our team. Tell them Reuben sent you, and they'll make sure we get connected right away.

One other thing I'll plug here: if you'll be at SuiteWorld coming up at the end of October in Las Vegas, we'll be a sponsor and a booth holder there, so come find us on the floor.

Michael (15:36)
Reuben, correct me if I'm wrong, but BlueSnap is out and about when it comes to trade shows and that sort of thing, right?

Reuben (15:43)
We are. We were just at Commerce Live earlier this year in Chicago at the end of April. We're very close when it comes to events for our integrated partners and platforms. We're all over the place during the year.

Michael (15:55)
Thanks for sharing that, Reuben. I know you all are very active when it comes to going to conferences and trade shows, especially as it relates to e-commerce and ERPs. So everybody, like Reuben said, if you have questions about payments or BlueSnap specifically, feel free to reach out to them. I just want to thank you for tuning in to this episode of the Anchor Group Podcast. We hope this podcast shares great information for you NetSuite and e-commerce users out there to help your business become that much more powerful and impactful every day. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll catch you in the next one.
